Second XI R8

18 Dec 2023 by Amanda Beckett

After a few weeks off thanks to the weather we came up against Coburg in our last game before christmas. We won the toss and decided to have a bat first

Darcy (40) and Stubbo (72) started us off well putting on 75 for the first wicket before Darcy fell shortly before drinks. Fitzy (25) then put on 47 with Stubbo for the 2nd wicket before Stubbo and Harvey (34) put on another 50 for the 3rd wicket. From there we lost a few quick wickets trying to increase the run rate heading into the final overs, before Nick (29* off 17) and Moose (10* off 6) gave us a boost at the death adding 30 off the last 2 and a half overs to get us up to 7/234 from our 45. It was a solid score built on some really good early partnerships which is something we had been missing in previous weeks.

Simmo (1/31 off 7) and Gags (0/28 off 9) started us off well keeping things nice and tight and Simmo picking up an early wicket. Coburg started to build a partnership until Moose produced an excellent piece of fielding to run out their number 3 to make them 2/50. Ansh (1/38 off 8) and Moose (3/35 off 9) bowled well in tandem before Ansh bowled their number 4 just before drinks to leave them 3/93. From there Coburg batted well rebuilding and keeping the run rate manageable until Ansh produced our 2nd runout of the day to remove their opener who had been holding their innings together. From there the pressure built on the batters and our 2 most economical bowlers for the day Gags and Moose came back to bowl at the death with Moose picking up 2 wickets in 2 balls and almost a third in the over to put us back on top. Both of them bowled really well to finish the innings keeping the batsmen to just singles or dots and in the end Coburg finished 8/226 just 8 runs short.

An excellent all round performance by the team with bat, ball and in the field, and really improved on some areas that have been letting us down in previous weeks. The result leaves us just a game out of the top 6 and will hopefully give us some momentum to push for one of those spots when we come back from the break.
