First XI Round 3 Wrap!

4 Nov by Amanda Beckett

Round 3 saw us travel over the Bridge to take on Port Melbourne as we tried to atone after a couple of pretty shaky weeks to start the season. We once again batted first and Taylor and Marts got us off to an ok start before we lost both, firstly Taylor and then Marts getting run out to be 2/29. Lachie and Jakson who would be the first to admit hasn’t been at his best steadied the ship before the former was dismissed to have us 3/65. The dismissal of Lach brought Declan to the crease and from then on , it was the Knight and O’brien show! The two boys who are both incredible strikers of the ball showed why they will be a force to be reckoned with, hitting balls to all parts with Declan making a magnificent 96 and Knighty who does an incredible amount of work not only as captain but other things behind the scenes making his second 100 for the club. What a magnificent innings by the self proclaimed king!! It’s been a big week for Jakson as he and Meg moved into their new home and then making 100 on the Saturday. A lesson to us all. Want to make a 100? Buy a new house ! We finished the innings at 6/267

The bowling innings could not have started better for us with Hopey doing what Hopey does and that’s hitting his elite lengths and getting rewarded with a couple of quick wickets . Port Melbourne hadn’t scored their first run until over 4 but there was no panic from them as the young lad from Sussex showed why Sussex County have a ripper on their hands as he played an innings of great maturity and substance beyond his years. Credit where credit is due Dylan Driscoll batted brilliantly, by making sure they were ahead in all sectionals starting with the power play , drinks , the 35th over and most importantly the end of the game . He made 157 in one of Port Melbournes greatest wins . I was really proud of our guys efforts to almost pinch the game in the last over as they lost a flurry of wickets late. Was really pleased for Sam Hope
Who got back to his best with two wickets and Jackson Wadden who came back absolutely brilliantly to bowl some tough overs to also finish with a couple of poles. Although we’re disappointed , we showed why we’re a good team and just need to fix up some areas and have better strategy in our bowling power plays and a win isn’t going to be far away. No panic stations as we lost and actually moved up two positions . No training on cup day so a big night Thursday as we look forward to hosting Melton for the 4th consecutive year.
