Second XI Round 3 Wrap!
This week our luck finally ran at the toss, with my third consecutive loss we were finally asked to bowl first. Pat (2/20 off 9) took a wicket in his first over for the third consecutive week, this time on the first ball of the game, to get us off to the perfect start. Pat and Will (1/13 off 4.1) bowled brilliantly to start us off and prevented Port Melbourne from getting off to a quick start which is so beneficial in one day games. Sonny (2/16 off 9) followed and kept up the pressure, getting rewarded with the second wicket and then having a runout come from him bowling as the tight bowling caused a mix up which ended with their captain being run out. Moose (2/32 off 9) and Jimmy (2/51 off 9) both bowled good spells through the middle and Moose picked up a wicket just before drinks to make it 4/71 at the break. We picked up regular wickets from there before a late flurry left them 9/116 with 9 overs left. Unfortunately from there we tried a little too hard to take the last wicket and with a few dropped catches allowed them to get to 158 before Will finished things in the last over. Despite the late fightback we knew the total was still under par and were confident to finish the job.
We lost Craig early in the chase before Stubbo (22) and myself (41) were able to rebuild and get through the powerplay. After Port Melbourne’s spinners combined for 7 wickets at least than 2 an over last week we knew that it was going to be important to stay busy against them and keep the score ticking over. We did well against them to start, getting the score to 77 before we were dismissed in consecutive overs, with Jayvier falling in the next as well. With the momentum now on their side, Port Melbourne were right back in the game with us 4 down and only halfway to the target. Cougar (28) and Will (35*) wrestled back the momentum and took us to within 20 runs to win before Cougar fell. Liam came in and finished the job with Will as we passed the score with 10 overs to spare.
Another very positive win to take us to 3-0 and have us sitting 3rd early in the season. Still plenty of improvements to be made and hopefully we can keep improving and move to 4-0 this week against Melton
