Under 15 Gold Round 1 Wrap!

14 Oct by Amanda Beckett

The Spotswood U15s GOLD opened their season playing away against Seddon on a cloudy, overcast night and on a turf wicket. Rose was made captain and she lost the toss and with Seddon only having 8 players, they asked us to have a bat.
We sent in Rhys and Jujhar as they have played on turf previously and they set about getting us to a positive start with any short balls being smashed to the boundary. After putting on 40 it took a good catch to dismiss Rhys for a brisk 23 but we had set a good foundation. Fox, Jack and Riaan all did their part batting in partnerships putting on 20 runs for each wicket with Jujhar to get us 4/97 in the 16th over. Jujhar was able to retire for a beautifully crafted 50, including 7 boundaries. AJ and Gavi then set about lifting the run rate for the last overs and put on 51 runs at better a run a ball including a sweet 6 by Gavi before he lost his wicket for 24. Roy came in for the last over and with Riaan making 26 not out, we got to a competitive 5/157
Our turn to take the field and we opened up with Gavi and Rhys who bowled well without much luck with the ball moving around a bit. It was then Roy and Fox to follow up from them. Roy was bowling really well and was unlucky with a normally easy catch being dropped and another harder chance going down but then Fox did Fox things. Fox was a bit erratic first time on turf but when he went full and straight at the stumps, he was unplayable. He got our first with a great “mark” at square leg by Callan and then destroyed the stumps of the next 2 batters to have Seddon 3/31 after 7 overs and the game under our control. Fox finished with 3/10 off his 2 overs.
Jack, Rose, Callan and Austin then came on, all of them bowling well and all deserved wickets, but then again we had some simple catches put down but Callan (1/7) got the 4th wicket and then Aussie (2/8) chimed in with a double wicket over to have them 6/63 after 15, the game now being played in dull light and was effectively over. With a bit of sharp fielding by Jack for a clean run out, Seddon were finally finished up at 7/69 and we had a win in our first game.
Being our first game, and for some it was their first time bowling on turf, I thought we did really well. Special mention to Kyal for putting on the gloves, with quicker bowlers and turf all new experiences for him, he did very well, giving up only 1 bye.
Need to be mindful we bowled 23 extras which is extra runs and balls we handed to the opposition, so something to work on.
Congrats to all the players as they all contributed in some way.
