Women’s- Round 8 v Gellibrand CC

10 Dec by Amanda Beckett

The Spotswood Wolves lined up at Home against Gellibrand on a glorious day. The Dream Team of Lauder and Wheeler rolled out an absolute belter of a wicket on Oval 2.

Gellibrand won the toss and elected to bat first. Facing some tight bowling, they ticked things along steadily. After 10ov, Gellibrand were 0/56.

The first wicket fell in the 13th over, for 65 to a gem from Ava. Clean bowled! Then the two other wickets fell to some fantastic fielding inside the ring. Attempted quick singles ended in run outs. The Wolves were well in the fight and The Lighthouses ended their innings at a very achievable 3-123.

Ava, Rose and Samantha Davies were the pick of our bowlers.

Unfortunately, during the course of our fielding innings, we lost our opening bat and leading run scorer Sarah Grouios to a calf injury. We wish her all the best for a speedy recovery.

So the Wolves had a very manageable 124 to chase off 20 overs. Unfortunately we just couldn’t get going. Credit where it’s due, Gellibrand’s bowlers bowled incredibly well and kept the handcuffs on. They didn’t let us get any momentum at all. It was 1/47 after 10ov and 5/81 after 20ov.

Whilst the scoreboard will suggest that we went down by 42 runs, it won’t show that nearly all of our batters retired and our fielding had improved greatly. Again, for a team that’s 6 games old, the progress we’ve made was fantastic to watch. With a bit of experience, the Wolves will be a team to contend with.

Special mention to Michelle Gjoni, who scored her first runs in a Spotswood shirt. The first of many to come.

Thank you to the many volunteers and Luke Jamieson for scoring the game and Chris Beckett for umpiring for us.

Standout bowlers:
Ava Bartol - 3ov 1/13
Rose Beckett - 3ov 0/7
Samantha Davies - 2ov 0/10

Standout batters:
Samantha McDevitt - 9 off 42 balls
Brenda Hadden - 8 off 20 balls
Ava Bartol - 7 off 9 balls
Stephanie McDevitt - 6 off 20 balls

We’ll be travelling next Sunday to take on Mambourin again for our last fixture before the Christmas break.
