Under 11 Gold Round 10 Match Report
Our last game before a well earned break and we were reminded that cricket is in fact a summer sport.
We swapped our hoodies and beanies for hats, sunscreen and water when taking on Williamstown (Liston) at Edwards reserve in sauna-like conditions.
They sent us in after winning the toss which I felt suited us given the heat. It's a bigger ground with a slow outfield so we needed to run our runs in order to post a decent score.
Willy picked up a wicket with the first ball of the game but lucky for us that didn't set the tone, with Ned and Edison recovering well. Percy kept the momentum going and Raffy was busy with his top score of the season.
At this stage we'd lost 6 wickets and I felt that if we didn't concede any more, then it put us in a good place. George and Aryanjoy were solid, scoring runs and putting value on their wicket. Then Leo came in and found the middle a few times after a slow start.
We ended up on 6/162 with Leo 25, Raffy 20, Ned 16 and Percy 12 being the main scorers.
It was going to be a tough score to defend as we'd emptied the tank batting in the heat, but the team needed to stay focused and bowl well given Willy were a strong team, and given they'd put some big scores on this season, it was anyone's game.
Willy started well with some free hitting and looked like running away with it, but out of nowhere Edison decided they weren't going to run on his arm and he threw the stumps down. That seemed to ignite something in us and from there, it was a constant flow of wickets,
and we were able to dry up the runs in the process. Our catching was flawless, Percy emulating Michael Neser with 2 caught and bowled, and almost held onto a screamer after going horizontal in the field. Definitely would have been one for the "Schweppes Classic Catches" segment from back in the day.
We were able to restrict Williamstown to 11/116. Our top bowlers were Raffy with 3/22, and Aryanjoy and Percy both with 2/14. Note that Ned, Leo, Edison and George also bowled very tightly when we needed them to step up.
This week our Stan's Grill award winner went to Edison for opening the batting and getting us off to a good start and that direct hit runout.
That's it for 2025, we resume at the end of January against Grand United at home.
